Workshop 3: Lighting and colour
Atmosphere - How you feel in a situation mood.
1. Scene - Auggies first day of school - When Auggie walks into the room every one stops talking and looks at him when he goes to sit down Amos says the seat is saved.
Angles/Shot - long shot/eye level of class, close up of Auggie to see his emotional reaction.
Lighting and colour.
Pallet - colours used in the scene. eg nature palette has colours from nature - green, brown.
Warm / Cold - Warm makes feel safe/comfortable.
Cold makes us feel clean
Bright - Vibrant, jumps out.
Dull - Faded, muted, blends in.
Natural - sun/moon light.
Artificial - Man made, Light bulb.
-Lighting and colour - Warm - Makes the classroom feel safe and welcoming.
-Bright Colour - gives the room energy and life.
-Natural light coming through the windows.
- Happy, Chilled, excellent , educational, inspiring.
Director - Wants the classroom to be a safe and happy environment in Mr Browns classroom. Even though it feels this way, Julien and Amos's behaviour is unkind.
In the scene of Augusts first day of school, Lighting and colour are used to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment. For instance, bright warm colours are used on the walls and natural lights comes through the windows to make the space look lively. This makes the audience feel excited inspired and that the space is educational and supportive for learning. This was done to show that Mr Brown had created a classroom space that would be welcoming to new students like Auggie. Coinciding with this is the use of body language. The children in the room are sitting up smiling and paying lots of attention they are learning ready. This reminds the viewer of the theme of kindness because the lighting and colour make the room welcoming for all students.

Rat dissection
This week we dissected a rat. We did this to explore the digestive system as it was the closest thing to the human body. There was 4 rats and we got into groups and the teacher demonstrated. We cut them open and looked at the digestive system. After we done that our group cut the heart. This was a cool experience because it was my first dissection.

Workshop 2: The Impact of Angle,Movement and Shots
A - Jack fighting Julian because Julien called Auggie a freak.
- Mr Brown pulling Jack off Julien.
- Dutch tilt used - Showing something is not right
- Low angle - makes one person look smaller than the other - Julien looks weak and vulnerable.
Viewer feels shocked, surprised, concerned and uneasy.
Director - Surprised, Sad, worried for Jack.
Other techniques - Music - Creates atmosphere, minor, slow motion - Makes fight more intense.
In the film wonder low angle shots and dutch tilts are used effectively. This is demonstrated in the scene where Jack attacks Julien because he calls Auggie a freak. In this scene a low angle dutch tilt shot is used to make Jack look stronger and Julien weak and vulnerable. This makes us feel shocked, surprised and concerned because Jack has never been violent. The purpose of this was to show the theme of kindness as Jack finally stands up for Auggie. Combined with this is the use of quiet, minor music and slow motion to create an atmosphere and make it more intense. This can be contrasted to the nature reserve fight scene where Auggie now show kindness by standing up for Jack.
B - Fight scene at nature reserve - Auggie gets new friends, High 5, no plague Jack Amos and others. They beat up seventh graders and run away.
-Wide angle long shots. make us feel like we are a bystander watching an important moment the emotions are theirs not ours.
- Audience - joyful, proud, careful, ecstatic, relived - Auggie is finally included and has friends.
- Director - Shows Auggie is finally fitting in, show the importance of friendship or kindness.
- Other techniques - lighting use of shadow outlining the boys feel like they are all in it together.

Workshop 1
Kindness - When people are respectful, caring, helping and include others.
Example 1 - Fight scene at the nature reserve.
Example 1 - Fight scene at the nature reserve.
- Amos and the boys rescue Auggie and jack from the bullies. At the end they high five Auggie
- This show kindness because up until this point the others hadn't touched him and treated him with respect
- Theme of kindness- is important because through it Auggie makes friends, is more confident and happier.
Example 2 - Cafeteria scene where Summer sits with Auggie.
- Shows theme of kindness because Summer leaves the friends she has been sitting with who were bystanders and went to sit with Auggie he was alone.
- Summer helps rebuild Auggies trust in friendships. If she hadn't show kindness by sitting with him he wouldn't have learnt how to make new friends and move on
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Importance of family and friendship - Through these relationships our characters build trust, resilience and self confidence.
Example 1 - Scene where Auggie cuts off his padawan braid.
- Link to importance of family because this shows that when Auggie is feeling sad/alone/depressed that he has a support network to build his resilience.
- Home is Auggies safe and supportive place he needs hi relationships with his parent to help him build confidence to make new friends.
- Shows importance of friendship becase Jack wasn't willing to let Julien bully Auggie anymore. Auggie is a real friend to Jack where as Julien is the kid of friend that puts you down if you don't agree with him.
- It is important because it shows how real friends treat each other they build trust and can forgive.
Being right VS being popular - Doing the right thing even when no one is watching or doing it.
Example 1 - Julien bullies Auggie
- Julien chooses to do things to be popular rather than doing the right thing. He calls Auggie names, hides notes in his locker and tells Auggie he should kill himself. Julien is the most popular boy in class so when he choses to mean that becomes the thing to do.
- Julien shows importance of being right over being popular because through his actions he has lost his friends and been removed from the school. Juxtaposed to this is will. He decides to be right rather then kind to Auggie and as a result keeps all his friend and isn't kicked out.

Wonder - WIP
Intro - Close up, Spaceman jumps into shot , Slow motion to give the feeling we are in space.
-Intro symbol of the astronaut helmet , covers his face, represents the barrier august puts between himself and the world.
Music - starts quiet, slow but the tempo and dynamics increase to build energy in the scene we hear a radio of ground control talking to astronaut
-next it is a tracking shot as we move away from the figure. it is now a boy in a helmet jumping on his bed
- Close up shows us augies reality or view of the world but as we pull back we see the real world
Nate "it is like leading a lamb into the slaughter"
Narrator 1 - Auggie Narrator 2 - Via Narrator 3 - Jack Narrator 4 - Mirrand Last Narrator - Auggie
2 mins - Building suspense as we still haven't seen the boys face. We dont know whats wrong but hints its bad - Hospital tags, School conva, Auggies dialogue in the voice over
Star Wars- a symbol of auggie wanting people to treat him normally - a safe place in the star wars universe there a lots of weird looking people so no one stares at then
Summer - " When choosing to be right or kind, choose kind"
Links-to the Theme-Popularity acceptance I've seen this though Jack as he says what he knows Julian wants to hear so he doesn't become the target-get picked on
The nature reserve fight scene: 1.29 - 1.32
During fight shots used to make Auggie and friends look bigger more powerful & the bullies weak and vulnerable.
-Music has fast tempo to build intensity.
Significance - Auggie has grown has a character, he is now willing to stand up for himself.
Significance - Auggie finally feels acceptance when the other boys stand up for him and does´t have to hide behind a mask anymore.

Halloween Scene :42.56 second
Body Language-change now has head held up high, walking with confident stride, interlarding with others
Music-Happy/upbeat-monster mash,fast tempo,lots of energy.
When he hears jack saying' if I looked like him I'd kill myself-music tempo gets slow, quiet dynamics yo make us focus use of diagetic smart kids laughter.
- star wars charterer Darth sidious used by Julien to make fun of Auggie.
-Significant-We see Auggie loses faith in the idea of friendship-if Jack can be that mean behind his back hour can be trust
Links-to the Theme-Popularity acceptance I've seen this though Jack as he says what he knows Julian wants to hear so he doesn't become the target-get picked on
Jacks fight scene: eye level mid shot makes us feel a part of the convo
sounds are diagetic low angle shot as boys hit ground, makes the scene more powerful and dangerous. Moves to close of the struggle
- Dutch tilt and low angle makes jack look more aggressive and violent.
-Music minor(sad), quiet dynamic - creates focus and intense. Slow-mo to see the event more clearly
significance- shows the theme of popularity/ acceptance jack has learned from his mistake and is standing up for AuggieThe nature reserve fight scene: 1.29 - 1.32

Food Testing
Aim: What nutrients are present in different food.
Hypothesis: We are testing for simple sugar, Complex sugar and protein. The things that we are testing are bread, egg, glucose, apple, milk and potato.
What I think:
Bread: Complex sugar
Egg: Protein
Glucose: Simple Sugar
Apple: Simple Sugar
Milk: Protein & Complex Sugar
Potato: Protein & Complex Sugar
Method for complex sugars: put two drops of iodine in the test tubes and wait.
Results
The bread turned black with the iodine. So it has complex sugar.
The apple turned black so it is positive.
The potato was positive.
The egg, the milk and the glucose were negative for complex sugar.
Method for simple sugars: Put 5 drops of Benedict's regnant in and heat.
Results
Results
The Glucose and the apple were positive.
The potato had a tiny bit but was not fully positive
The egg, milk and bread were negative
Results:
Milk and egg positive.
Apple, potato, bread and glucose negative.
Conclusion: The conclusion was I got 4 out of 6 things right in my hypothesises.
Discussion: I think this test was fun to do and the two tests that I did were successful. I learnt that simple sugars give a fast burst of energy. That complex sugars give slow bursts of energy. Also that protein mostly comes from animals.
