Science Week 8

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

As you watch the video answer these questions:

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years?
Climate Change
How do we see climate change affecting the globe?
  1.   Floods
  2.   strong winds
  3. Heat waves
  4.   Storms

What is needed to change history?
stop using fossil fuels

Is climate change a man made disaster?
yes

Dramatic action must be made in the next 10 years to change it?

Why is our climate changing?
world is getting hotter

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
Fossil fuels

What is the main problem?
burning stuff

What are examples of these?
coal gas oil

Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
carbon dioxide

How much hotter now is our world?
1 degree

How is this affecting creatures / animals like bats?
They died

What percentage of species are near exteinction?
8%

How could this effect the world ecosystems?
Things can't eat other things and they die

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
Wild fires

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
1. flash flooding
2. more rain
3. super storms

What is another effect of climate change?
Ice melting

What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
Countries will be consumed

How does this affect people?
country's disappear

What other things affect oceans change?
warmer water

What does to much heat do to coral?
kill it

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?

they wouldn't make money.

Stop at 23.39

Investigation

You can decide on how you would like to do this investigation. Your presentation could be on the blog, slides, or Powerpoint.

Write a definition, upload an image and list where these fossil fuels are mined.

  1. Coal. A solid combustible fossil fuel  Image result for coal In coal mines
  2. Oil. A black liquid that is used to power every gas powered vehicleImage result for oil   This is mined in ocean on oil rigs and on land
  3. Natural Gas. A gas that is found under ground Image result for Natural GasUnderground

Write a paragraph and upload an image about each of these renewable energy.

  1. Solar. Sun hits solar panels and causes electricity. Here are the top two countries that use solar are China and U.S.A
  2. Wind.   Wind turbines get spun by wind and cause electricity. Top two countries that use these are China and U.S.A again
  3. Waves. Machines that capture waves and push air through turbines and the turbines spin. Waves go into a chamber and get stuck. Then they go into a machine. After that is pushes air through a turbine. The top two countries that use these are Ghana and Portugal.
  4. Hydro. They are kind of like water falls. water comes from a lake and go's into a hydro powered dam and pushes a turbine and causes electricity. The top two countries that us hydro are China and Brazil.                                                   Image result for Hydro dam

If My Shoes Were Alive

Today For community time we had to write about what if our shoes were alive. Here is my work.

When I would leave the house they would... Jump in there little shoe box car and drive away. Then they would go to the docks and jump in a shoe box boat and float away. They would sail around the world and go to different places. After that they would sail back to the docks. They would jump back into their shoe box car and drive to the shoe shop. Then they would get sold for $100. After they would run away and go back home. They would chase the dog around. After they would jump back in the shoe rack and be their when I get back.

C.I.P Week 8

Today we had to watch a video about mindful colouring.
We also had to make a colouring competition. We are doing this
for mindful art.

Some of the things we were talking about was. How many different
colouring competitions do we need to make? Who are these for? Is
their any different age groups for this.

I think to display this we should put the colouring in competition on
our blogs then you have to print it out. I think once your done you
send it to Hornby High school.

What do you think. Comment if you think something should be
changed.

Reading Week 7 & 8

This week we had to read the story and answer the questions of the struggle of Samoa's independence.

Question #1 How do you think they felt in 1900 when Samoa was taken from them. They felt heart broken. Why? Because their country had been taken from them. Things have changed. The Chiefs have lost their place as chiefs. The us navy had taken over Samoa and laws had changed

Question #2 What Challenges do you think they had to face. Their country had been taken, the laws had been changed,a disease had spread and people were getting killed.

Question #3 What is quarantine. Quarantine is something were if you have a disease that can kill. If it can spread really fast you get put quarantine. Influenza had spread and it had killed millions so they got thrown in quarantine.

Question #4 What questions do you have. I have one. Why was Samoa taken over.

Eco System

Today For science We had to watch a video about nature and answer these questions.

What animals keep our jackets warm?     Ducks

What animal makes our boots waterproof?    Cows

Where does the water in our rivers come from?  Snow

Why do we need healthy rivers?     To drink good water and catch
healthy fish

What are some of the good things about mosquitoes? They

keep water clean and feed fish and birds and pollinate plants

Why are bees dying?  There are heaps of reasons.. insecticides

What do bugs do to our leaves Eat them

Reduce

Reuse

Recycle

How much dung would we be in if there were no dung de-composers? 7-feet

Who runs this planet? Nature

Science

  • Renewable Energy
  • Fossil Fuels
  • Ecology
  • Our Planet
  • Water
  • Plants
  1. 15 Points are needed to get a badge
  2. A high standard of work.
  • All experiments are written up ( Aim, Materials, Steps, Conclusion)
  • Two photos of your experiment
  • 6 sentences at least for a conclusion

Science will be twice per week.

  • Lesson 1: This will be an Experiment that involves blogging. You will be expected to open a new post, copy Mr Palmer's blog and paste it on your new post.
  • Lesson 2: This will be an Investigation that relates to the topic from Lesson 1. It will be own choice and displayed in a way that you prefer. For example - PowerPoint, Doc, etc

BLOGGING.

All the blogs and science lessons will be displayed on Mr Palmers blog:

Bookmark it!

Expectations:
  • 1 blog must be completed per Hurumanu lesson.
  • A completed blog must have the four headings ( Aim, Method, Findings, Conclusion), correct writing and punctuation under each heading and be published. No post, no points.
  • 2 images of the experiment / investigation on the blog.
Using the Scientific method of investigation:

Aim: What the experiment / investigation is about.
Method: Instructions on how the experiment / investigation is carried out. This includes the equipment.
Findings: What have we learnt or found out from our experiment / investigation. This is called Data, Information or Facts. It is displayed in a chart, table or picture.
Conclusion:

My Hurumanu Science Goals:

1.  Get my science badge.

2.  Use the science equipment safely.

3. to always finish my work.

Kindness

Today for C.I.P we had to describe this video and say the main aspect.

In the video there was a girl who asked her grandma if she could buy a cake for her grandpas birthday. But they couldn't and they left it at the counter. Then a man came and remembered when he was a child he asked if he could have a cake and his mum said no. Then a man bought the cake gave it to him and gave him a note. So he bought the cake for the girl. He gave her a not that. The grandma asked his name and said I am another man in the line.

The message is be kind to people. If someone does something nice to you. You have to do something nice to someone else.
